First up - my story to my diagnosis….
Hang tight….might want to grab some popcorn for this…..just kidding! I will be as brief yet informative as possible!
I was diagnosed with UC in 2009 after navigating through numerous doctor appointments. Finally, I found a doctor who listened to my concerns and symptoms, leading to my diagnosis at the age of 26. Though relieved to have answers, I was also devastated and overwhelmed by the prospect of multiple medications. However, fueled by my love of research, I dove into understanding my condition and exploring ways to support my body's healing process.
My Journey to Remission:
I started by making small changes, beginning with removing gluten from my diet to address inflammation. Within a week of going strictly gluten-free, I noticed a significant improvement in my symptoms. I also prioritized daily physical activity, which had been a cornerstone of my wellness routine since my late teens. Over the following year, I carefully monitored my diet, identifying foods that made me feel good and those that didn't. By my one-year follow-up colonoscopy, my doctor found no signs of colitis, and I had achieved remission within just one year of my diagnosis - pretty incredible right?! As I approach my 15-year mark with ulcerative colitis, I'm proud to say that, aside from a few years, I've remained in remission. While I eagerly await my next check-up, I'm grateful to be feeling great and optimistic about the future.

However, through my personal journey and experience, I've discovered that holistic nutrition offers a powerful approach to managing symptoms and improving overall well-being. By prioritizing nourishing whole foods rich in nutrients, we can support our body's natural healing processes and enhance our quality of life.
Embracing Plant-Based Diets for Autoimmune Support:
Research has shown that plant-based diets can have significant benefits for individuals with autoimmune conditions. By prioritizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats, you can reduce inflammation, support gut health, and strengthen your immune system. Incorporating a variety of colorful, nutrient-rich foods into your diet can provide essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that are crucial for optimal health. Remember, each autoimmune is different and reacts differently to fruits/vegetables. Make sure you are working with your body and not against it.
Practical Tips for Incorporating Holistic Nutrition into Your Daily Routine:
Making changes to your diet can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some practical tips to help you incorporate holistic nutrition into your daily routine:
1. Focus on Whole Foods: Choose whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible. Opt for fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive.
2. Experiment with Plant-Based Meals: Try incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet. Start by replacing meat with beans, lentils, tofu, or tempeh in your favorite recipes. Get creative with colorful salads, hearty soups, and flavorful stir-fries (a family favorite) that showcase the abundance of plant-based ingredients available.
3. Listen to Your Body: This is SO important!! Our bodies give us clues and talk to us in subtle ways. Pay attention to how different foods make you feel. Keep a food journal to track your meals and any symptoms you experience. This can help you identify trigger foods and make more informed choices about what to eat.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support hydration and overall health. Herbal teas, infused water, and coconut water are also great options to help keep you hydrated and refreshed. One of my favorite ways to keep hydrated besides drinking water is to add a packet of LMNT
to my morning routine. Typically before I workout, even on the days I don’t train I make sure I am fueling my body with electrolytes (something I learned by listening to the cues my body was giving me).
5. Prioritize Balance: Remember that holistic nutrition is about balance, not perfection. Aim to make healthy choices most of the time, but don't be too hard on yourself if you indulge occasionally. Listen to your body, honor your cravings, and practice mindful eating to foster a positive relationship with food. This my friend will go a long way!
